Sooooo sorry to all who may have checked for updates. Wed - Fri.  Life got crazy last week.  But We're back.  Here is Vocab, Spelling, and Journal from week 5.


Clemency – noun – (Klemonsee)

·         a tendency or disposition to be merciful.

·         To moderate (reduce) the severity of a punishment

·         An act of leniency (bending the rules)



Corps – noun – (Kor)

·         A group of people working together

o   Peace Corps

·         An organized subdivision of the military.

Derision – noun – (Deerission)

·         The use of ridicule or scorn to show contempt

Dispel – Verb – (Dis spell)

·         To scatter

·         Two successive lines of verse forming a unit.  Usually includes a rhyme.

Vocabulary Week 4

Abide – Verb

·         To wait for

Amiable – Adjective

Ambulatory – Adjective

Journal:  What is your best quality?  What is your worst quality?

4th Per - Library to work on Native American presentations:
  • Pick a Native American tribe that lived on the Eastern Seabord (east coast) at the time the Europeans started arriving in North America.
  • Look at their lives before the Europeans came and changed things. 
  • What were their buildings like, and what kind of housing did they live in?
  • What kind of leadership system did they have?  Who was in charge, and how did they get that job?
  • What was the religion like?
  • What kind of culture existed?  What were the roles of men vs. women?  Old vs. Young?  Slave or free?  Leader or follower?
  • Describe their food and clothing.
  • Discuss WHERE they lived and what time period you looked at.  Have they disappeared or is the tribe still around somewhere?
  • Put this all together into a powerpoint that you will share with your classmates next week. 
    • It should be between 8-15 slides and should include a works cited slide for any information/pictures you took from the internet.
    • Remember the examples of good and bad powerpoints I showed you last year and try and avoid doing some of the mistakes you learned about

5th Per:  Reading day - Maps testing finishing up and girls gone to Powell.
6th Per: Lesson 6
8th Per:  I inadvertently used the wrong edition of the grammar text book to create my lesson plans.  So we adjusted on the fly, and instead of reading along, we listened to two reading selections and answered questions as a group about them.  No homework.

:  Write down the two overriding questions about the story Julius Caesar. 

1.  What do you do when someone you love is going to do something which you feel is very wrong and will hurt other people?
2.  Are you justified in doing something wrong to prevent another from doing something you feel is even more wrong? Do two wrongs make a right?
3rd Period - Maps testing
4th Period - Read two articles I have provided.  One is about global warming from a conservative perspective and the other one is also about global warming from a liberal perspective.  We discussed these issues in class and added a few more notes to our Liberal/conservative paper.

Greek 4:   
Mega - Large - Megalomaniac (people like Evil Knievel, Hitler, etc. who have huge egos and think the world owes them a favor.)
Graph - Write or draw - phonograph, polygraph, telegraph, etc.


2nd Period - DOL 7.  Greek 4.  and turn in the papers I asked you to write about the two stories on pages 967 and 970 - "7 Ages" and "Persephone."  We started talking about the second story, but I soon realized that we needed to do something different to make sure 5th period (who was maps testing today) would not get left behind. 

3rd Per - DOL 7.  Continue reading from "Lemon Brown in Lit book.  Pages 16-20.

4th Per - Greek 4.  Discussion of republicans vs democrats and their views on the environment.  Traditionally, Democrats and/or Liberals want to save the earth, even if that means that we have $10 a gallon gas.  Republicans, or conservatives want to use the resources we have available to us here on earth, even if that means we have to live with a little polution.  Start thinking about where you fall in the political spectrum on these issues.

Vocabulary - week 3:

Altruistic – Noun

·         Unselfish regard for the welfare of others.

·         Taking one for the team



Malice – Noun

·         Desire to cause pain, injury, or distress to another.

o   Many many many movie characters use this root word for names of bad guys.

o   Can you think of examples?



Myopic – Adjective

·         Myo – closed.  Opic – sight

·         An unwillingness to look at the truth.  Unable to see the facts.  A narrow view

·         Also a medical condition – Myopia.



Archaic – Adjective

·         Having the characteristics of the past.  Old.  Usually in reference to an outdated way of thinking or doing things.



Euphemism – noun

·         The substitution of an agreeable word or phrase for one that is not so acceptable. 

o   It’s a way of saying something naughty or mean without saying something naughty or mean.  ;-)

o   “If you know what I mean.”

4th Per: - Discussion of money, jobs, unions, etc in the eyes of Republicans or Democrats.  We read an article about the Postal service being heavily mired in debt right now, and yet, still paying thousands of employees to literally sit there  and do absolutely nothing because of Union rules and regulations.  Where do you stand on this kind of issue?  In VERY simplistic terms, Republicans usually want to save the business at the expense of people's jobs and livlihoods, and Democrats usually want to save the jobs at the expense of the business

Classes:

2nd Period and 5th Period: 
-DOL and Greek
-Read the short excerpt "The 7 stages of man" by Shakespeare beginning on page 967 in your literature books.  Think about the ways these stages are still very true to us today.  I had asked the question:  Why do we read Shakespeare?   Then read the story "Demeter" on the next few pages.  Look for ways that these two stories relate to our lives today and to each other.  We will continue discussing these ideas on Tuesday. 

Due:  Five paragraph essay, Journal from Tuesday about bedrooms.

3rd Period:  We began reading the first story in our literature text - The treasure of Lemon Brown.

Due:  5 Paragraph Essay and any late journal entries you may have.

4th Period:  We discussed the Republican presidential debate on TV last night, and read a story about the world trade center towers from the Junior Scholastic magazines.  See me for a copy of the story.

6th Period:  Lesson 4 in books.

8th Period:  We finished going over the organizational format of our 5 paragraph essays. 
Due: 5 Paragraph essay for Tuesday.  Bring your literature books on Tuesday!

-Eu - Good - Eulogy (the nice things said at a person's funeral.
-Caco - bad - Cacography (terrible handwriting)

2nd Per:  Finish reading 5 paragraph essays to each other.  Begin discussion of why we still read things like Shakespeare.  What do you think?  We will be reading from the text on page 967 tomorrow.

3rd Per:  Group edit 5 paragraph essays to see if they meet criteria.

4th Per:  Small groups work on memorizing the locations of the 50 states with the flashcards.  Short game of around the world with state's locations.  Discuss the presidential debates going on tonight and Obama's new $300,000,000,000 bailout he is giong to discuss tomorrow night.

5th Per:  Finished reading the 5 paragraph essay introductions to the class.  Begin considering the question "Why read Shakespeare?"  We will discuss this in class tomorrow.

6th Per:  Reading day

8th Per:

- Daily Grammar Lessons #9, 10 - working with helping verbs, contractions, and adverbs.  Website:  www.dailygrammar.com

- Begin outlining the topic or thesis of a 5 paragraph essay.  There must be a point to prove - which is your thesis.  Then you need 3 points to try and prove that you have a good argument.  We'll continue these tomorrow.

Vocab Week 2:
Harbinger – Noun


• A person who goes on ahead to provide either a warning of things to come, or to get lodging and accommodations ready for the people who follow behind.

o Usually today this is a negative thing.

 “The Harbinger warned of the coming war, but nobody took him seriously till the first shot was heard.”

Kerfuffle – Noun

• Disturbance, Fuss, lots of attention

o Every time Lindsay Lohan gets arrested, it causes quite a kerfuffle in Hollywood.



Languish – Verb

• To become weak or lethargic and slow

• To live in a state of depression, slowly going downhill.

o Unemployed fathers often languish away on the couch watching soap operas and feeling sorry for themselves.

Discern – Verb

• To distinguish between

• To detect with the eyes or other senses

• To know or recognize something mentally.

o Even though girls can give all kinds of signs of their attentions, most guys usually can’t discern when a girl likes them and wants them to ask her out. Try the Elbow trick. 

Lit Term: Catharsis– Noun

• A Greek term first used by Aristotle to describe the emotional cleansing or purification that results after watching a tragedy performed on stage.

• After experiencing a terrible ordeal, one may feel an overwhelming sense of relief.

• While reading about something horrifying or tragic, the reader experiences the characters’ ordeal vicariously and feels the same sense of release – or catharsis.

I learned a lot of interesting things about you all.  Hopefully, you all learned a few things about public presentations. 

4th Per - continue working on computers to find the political party platforms for the Republicans, Democrats, and one other party of your choice.  You need to look up their policies about the following 6 topics:
  • taxes
  • education
  • social security
  • welfare - including things like medicare, medicade, foodstamps, etc.
  • defense
  • jobs
  • other
Due next Wednesday

6th Per - Lit skills:  Write a short excerpt using the 5 senses we discussed in connecting with the text.  Share the story or experience with yoru classmates.
