TOTAL BUMMER!!!!! Our ski trip was canceled, so we had to come back and actually spend a day in school instead of being productively engaged in breaking our legs, bruising our muscles and bones, getting frostbite, etc.  Oh well.  There will be other days to attempt self mutilation.

Thursday - January 27, 2011

1st Per - Creative Writing:
We read the George Orwell story "To Shoot an Elephant" in class and discussed it.  No homework.  Papers and Journal entries due tomorrow.

2nd Per - Honors
We discussed the 3 poems from pages 316, 317, and 318 and the compare and contrast responses you wrote for them.  We also started to read the George Orwell story "To shoot an Elephant."  We'll finish it on Monday or Tuesday and discuss it.

3rd Per - 8th Grade
Mrs. Henley has provided a handout of how to organize a persuasive essay.  We spent the period reviewing this and discussing good essay organization.  I have copies of it on my homework counter.  Please pick one up if you didn't get one in class today.  No homework today, but don't forget to study for the vocab and spelling tests tomorrow!  We also had a little spell-off in class to choose an alternate member of the spelling Bee team.  Alex was the lucky winner and will step in if one of the other three can't go.

4th per - 7th Grade
We read from page 212 today and discussed the article about Bubonic plague in Europe and it's ramifications.  This was tied in to students ability to grab the most important information from a book and be able to write a credible response to a question asked about the topic.  We also had a brief spell off to pick an alternate member of the spelling bee team for the 7th grade.  Rachel B. won this and will take the place of one of the other three if they can't or won't go.  Congrats, Rachel!

5th per - 12th Grade
We read from the text two other poems from John donne.  The one on page 292 - called a Valediction forbidding mourning was about a son that Donne lost.  The other, on page 290 was probably written after he had been unsuccessful winning some woman's heart earlier in his life, or had been scorned by such a woman.  We contrasted these two poems with the Meditation 17 on page 297.  No homework, but remember to study for the vocab and spelling tests tomorrow.

6th per - 10th Grade
Its ESSAY Time!  Yea!!!

Part 1:
You will research the life of one of the authors in your textbook.  We will chose authors on Monday or Tuesday of next week.  The paper should be between 2 - 4 pages long, will include citations and a works cited page and will discuss:
-The writer's early life.  What was their upbrining like?  Where did they live?  Parents?  Siblings? Etc.
-The writer's career life.  Many writers are not successful paying the bills with their work, or they are simply discovered after they are dead.  If the person was an unapprecaited living author, how then, did they  make their living?  How might that tie in with their stories?  Herman Melville spent several years out at sea on a whaling ship before he ever wrote Moby Dick.  It obviously influenced his writing greatly.
-IF the author was lucky enough to be paid to write, what was that part of their life like?

Part 2:
You will put together a "Prezi" on the computer showcasing the author's life.  You will need an email account to log into and use Prezi, but the basic service is free.  You will present these to the rest of the class sometime the following week.  We will have several days on the computers to put these together.  Prezi is not too hard to use, but it does have a learning curve, so you will need some practice.

Wednesday - January 26, 2011

1st per:
Typing day in library.  Personification papers due on Friday.

2nd Per:
First of all, your Emotion poems this morning were simply fabulous.  I was very impressed by all of them.
Read from pages 316, 317, and 318.  Write a short (1/2 page) response to the idea: "Is it better to go out in a blaze of glory like these two authors, or to fade away slowly."  Reference each of the 3 poems in your response.  Due Thursday.

3rd Per:  Cady Williams came in to speak with the class today for the first 5 minutes about the results of the NAEP test you took back in November.  She gave each student a handout about the potential places they need to focus on to be successful in getting ready for college.  It also contained a fairly detailed analysis of what careers you may be interested in later in life.  Each student got their own printout.

After Mrs. Williams, we had the spelling bee!  Our three winners who will be accompanying me to Lovell on Feb 09, are Connor, Adam, and Tanner.  Congrats to each of you.  You will be excused from the spelling test this week as a reward.

The final 5 minutes of class were devoted to finishing up what research you could find on your persuasive essay topics.  The notecards will be checked on Friday.

4th Per:  Spelling BEE!!! Our 3 class winners were Cole Catlin, Zoriah Tolman, and Carly Henderson.  Congrats.  You will be excused from this week's spelling and vocab tests.  After the spell-off, we spent some time using the whiteboards to review this week's spelling words.

5th Per:  John Donne was a remarkable person, who wrote very very deep, metaphorical poetry.  We read from page 297 "No man is an island."  Students were asked to summarize this very deep poem.   Get inside Doone's head.  Good luck.

6th Per:  We finished reading from the text on page 969 and 970 about Shakespeare's "7 Ages of Man" and the story about Demeter and how and why we have the seasons we do now.    I passed out a worksheet (which can be found on the homework counter) and asked students to look for 5 examples of similarities between these two wildly different stories.    We'll talk about these tomorrow.

Friday, January 21, 2011

Thursday - January 20, 2011

1st - Creative writing:
There are good metaphors, bad metaphors, and just plain awful ones.  There are some rules to observe.
1. Mixed Metaphor. This is a metaphor that contains completely unrelated comparisons.

-Suddenly, she was pinned by the spotlight, a struggling fish caught in a spider's web.
-All at once he was alone in this noisy hive with no place to roost.

1B.  Some metaphors compare things are are too similar to each other and therefore miss the point.
-He was as tall as a 6'3" tree.
-The miles on the highway rolled on and on and on just like the freeway across the valley.

2. Inappropriate Analogies. If you're writing about a European woman in the 1700s, don't say, Her eyes held the glow of a late-night laptop.

2b. And watch out for comparisons that give the wrong mental image:
-The beautiful child was the center of attention, with his golden curls and tuna fish complexion.

3. Clichés. Certain metaphors have simply been done to death and, as a result, have lost their power completely. The trouble is that they’re so much a part of our everyday conversation, they tend to slip through the cracks.
-Even though the job paid peanuts, Joe was pleased as punch because he had gone through hell and back, keeping a firm grip on reality the whole time, and was finally seeing his dream come to life.

Assignment:  Write 20 metaphors or similies to share with the class.  Include 5 from each of the three rules, and 5 of your own choice.  We will discuss these on Monday.

2nd - Honors:
Read pages 308 - 310 about Ben Johnson in the Literacy book today.  Complete the Writing focus assignment on page 309.  Due Monday

3rd - 8th grade:
We continued our research on the computers.

4th - 7th Grade:
Mrs. Henley went through an example of a current event summary that she put together.  We discussed what she kept, why, and how it could all be tied together into a coherent summary with a solid conclusion.  The first current event for this class will be due next Friday, the 29th.

5th - 12th grade:
We are reading from page 287 in the literacy textbook.  The idea of Carpe Diem, or taking advantage of the time you have available is a common one throughout history.  Many poets and authors have looked back on their youth with "if only" sighs.  The Carpe Diem poem is due on Tuesday of Next Week.

6th - 10th grade:
We discussed some questions about page 969 in the Literacy text.  1/2 of the period was given to work on the 7 stages of man papers that are due on Monday.  30 pts.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Wednesday - January 19, 2011

1st - Creative Writing - Only one student was in class today, so it became a reading day towards your book reviews due in Feb.

2nd - Honors - We took notes on the Greek Morphemes first 10 words.  No homework.  Just good to know stuff for future language tests.

3rd - 8th grade - We had some spelling duels at the board to practice this weeks spelling.  Then we went over the rules and the packet for the district spelling contest that will be held in Lovell on Feb 09, 2011.  The top three spellers from 8th grade will go with me.  The last 7 minutes was spent brainstorming pros and cons to consider for your persuasive papers with your partners.  It's critically important for any successful argument to address the opposition's viewpoints.

4th - 7th grade - We went over the spelling bee rules and packets.   The district contest will be in Lovell on Feb 09, 2011.  The top three spellers from the 7th grade will accompany me on the trip.  The classroom competition will be next Wednesday.  After that, we went over an example of an article I had summarized for the class.  I showed the process required to take a newspaper article and condense it down to 1/4 to 1/2 of a page of the critically important information.  In addition, you will begin doing a weekly current event for my class for the next 2 months starting next Friday.  These will look as follows:

-Name:  (your name)
-Title: (What is the title of the article)
-Author: (Who wrote it)
-Location (Where was it located?  What is the name of the newspaper AND what page # was it on?  Or, if it's from the internet, what is the name of the website and what is that specific page's URL?)
-Date: (This is the date the article was published, NOT the date you read it.)

-Summary:  Here, you will show that you have learned how to read and find the critically important information from a newspaper or magazine article.  This should be NO LESS than 1/4 of a page, and NO MORE than 1/2 of a page.

Opinion:  Who cares?  Why is this article important?  You need to provide 3 - 5 sentences about your opinions on this subject.

5th - 12th grade - We finished reading from pages 285 and 286 about the poems "To His Coy Mistress" and "The Virgins, to Make Much of Time."
Assignment:  Write a 6 - 8 stanza poem with 4 - 6 lines in each stanza about the concept of "Carpe Diem" or, Sieze the day!  30 points.  Due Tuesday the 25th.  If you are really brave, you could write a love poem (just in time for Valentines!)  ;-)

6th - 10th grade - We had a spell off at the start of class to practice this week's vocab and spelling words.  We then finished reading from Shakespeare's short poem entitled "The 7 Ages of Life" and discussed it.
Assignment:  Write a reflective and forward looking paper about the 7 ages in YOUR life.  What were you like as a baby, a young child, and a young adult?  What will you be like, or what would you like to be like as you hit the next 4 stages.  30 pts.  Due Monday.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Tuesday - January 18, 2011

Creative Writing -

4th Period - 7th Grade English
-We continued to read from pages 206 - 209 in the literacy text book.  Copies of the "rat" story from the newspaper article in your text book were passed out for students to try and summarize.  Then we had students check their work against what other students thought was important.  Did you all highlight the same parts of the story?  Why or why not?  Tomorrow, we will be continuing the summarization process after we go through the spelling bee information.

5th Period - 12th Grade English
6th Period - 10th Grade English

-Greek Morphemes are small parts of words handed down to us from the ancient Greeks that have meaning in and of themselves.  Pyro, Ectomy, Naut, Astro, etc.  If you know what the roots of the words mean in the original Greek (and/or Latin) you can dissect the words so they make sense - even if you've never seen them before.
-We'll be doing one of these lists every week, and will just keep a running total.  The goal is to help you with your college entrance exams.

Monday, January 17, 2011

1st Period - Creative Writing
Due to technical problems, the students had the day in the library to finish writing up their projects.  They should be ready to go and turned in tomorrow.
Journal entries for this week are also due tomorrow.  1 day to live over again.

2nd Period - Honors English IV
We finished up the Essay "Bartleby the Scrivener."  Is humanity uncaring to those less fortunate?  Is the boss a good Christian man, or a spineless coward for his handling of Bartleby?  You have been assigned a persuasive essay - 5 paragraphs minimum - about whether the boss is a good man or a spineless fool.  Typed.  Due Wednesday.

3rd Period - 8th grade English
We learned how to do note cards for research papers today.  You will make TWO sets of note cards.
One set of note cards, called your SOURCE CARDS, should contain all the information you can gather about your sources.
-Who is the author?
-What is the title of the book/magazine/website, etc.
-What date was it published?
-Where was it published? (printed sources like books, newspapers and magazines only.  This is not   usually known with a website.)
-What is the name of the publishing company? (Printed materials only again, just like with the "Where" from above.)
-If it is a website, make sure you get the URL.  I usually copy and paste these into a word document rather than try and write down the entire thing, which is often a very long and random series of letters, numbers and signs.
-Use ONE card per source.  Write on the front of the card only.
-Make sure to number these cards for quick reference later, and to help with the content cards.

The second set of note cards, called your CONTENT CARDS, should contain any information you find that you want to use in your paper.
-Qoutes, thoughts, ideas, facts, charts, etc can be included.
-Write ONE thought or quote PER CARD.  Write on the front of the card only for ease of viewing later on when you go to organize your paper.
-Make sure to include "quotation" marks if something is a direct quote.
-Number these cards according to the source you got them from.  So, if you found your first quote from your first source, you would label the card 1.1.
-When you find your second thought or quote from the same first source, you should label it 1.2.  The third thought will be 1.3, etc.
-When you begin selecting information from your second source, label that card 2.1.  The second thought from the second source will be 2.2, etc.
-Again, write only ONE thought PER CARD - even if it wastes a lot of space.  This will GREATLY aide you in your organization of the paper later on.

Student names were drawn from a bag to see who had which topic.  Every student was assigned a topic and was told whether they were Pro or Con for their topic.  So, every topic has two students working on it - One for the idea, and one against it.
Mrs. Henley has the list of which students were assigned to which topics and whether they are Pro or Con.

4th Period - 7th grade English
We started reading about the "Structure and Purpose of Informational Texts" from page 206 and 208 in the literature books.  We talked about how things written for newspapers are different from things written for enjoyment reading.  Newspapers have the most important things at the beginning.  Books and other things we read for enjoyment can afford to take much longer in getting around to the point.  These lessons will culminate in students taking information from newspapers and doing little summaries and reports on what they find.  Sometimes, these are called current events in history classes.

5th Period - 12th grade English
We started reading some poems about youth and love.  The first is on page 284 of your literature books titled "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time." by Robert Herrick.  The second one is on page 285 - "To his Coy Mistress." We'll finish that one on Tuesday.

6th Period - 10th grade Engish
We are reading from Shakespeare on page 966 - Universal themes across Genres and times.  We study literature (hopefully) because it is still applicable to our lives - even if it was written by people hundreds of years ago.  "The Seven Ages of Man" proves that although we have fancier houses, and new toys like computers, phones, etc., as humans we really haven't changed that much.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

  • We worked through a grammar worksheet together as a class. Subject, verb, Direct Object, Indirect Object, Articles, Adverbs, Prepositions, etc. were identified.

5th Period - 12th Grade English:

  • Journals and Vocab Due today.
  • Examples of Irony discussed to the class by various students.
  • The unwritten rules for adjectives were explained. Why do we say "The 5 large red Australian horses" instead of The large 5 Australian Red horses"? There is a natural order for these. It usually goes:
  • Quantity, quality, size, age, color, origin, material.
  • These are UNWRITTEN rules, so there may be some discussion on a few minor points. Or some sentences may seem to sound better with the words in a slightly different order.
  • Assignment: Compose five sentences with five adjectives each. Label each adjective as to what kind it is.

6th Period - 10th Grade English:

  • See 5th period lesson. It was the same.

Tuesday, January 11, 2011
