Harbinger – Noun
• A person who goes on ahead to provide either a warning of things to come, or to get lodging and accommodations ready for the people who follow behind.
o Usually today this is a negative thing.
“The Harbinger warned of the coming war, but nobody took him seriously till the first shot was heard.”
Kerfuffle – Noun
• Disturbance, Fuss, lots of attention
o Every time Lindsay Lohan gets arrested, it causes quite a kerfuffle in Hollywood.
Languish – Verb
• To become weak or lethargic and slow
• To live in a state of depression, slowly going downhill.
o Unemployed fathers often languish away on the couch watching soap operas and feeling sorry for themselves.
Discern – Verb
• To distinguish between
• To detect with the eyes or other senses
• To know or recognize something mentally.
o Even though girls can give all kinds of signs of their attentions, most guys usually can’t discern when a girl likes them and wants them to ask her out. Try the Elbow trick.
Lit Term: Catharsis– Noun
• A Greek term first used by Aristotle to describe the emotional cleansing or purification that results after watching a tragedy performed on stage.
• After experiencing a terrible ordeal, one may feel an overwhelming sense of relief.
• While reading about something horrifying or tragic, the reader experiences the characters’ ordeal vicariously and feels the same sense of release – or catharsis.
